Mattarella in Vinci celebrates Leonardo: «Great Italian, absolute protagonist in Europe»

“In Italy, in the whole of Europe and in other countries in which Leonardo Da Vinci will be remembered, let that ‘obstinate rigour’ – in every circumstance – be properly applied. As far as our Country is concerned, it will be the way to remember, with consistent respect, a great Tuscan, a great Italian, then an absolute protagonist on the European scene, today an irrepressible reference point in the world”. Leonardo the universal heritage. That’s how the President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella, has commemorated the genius of Vinci, whose death this year marks the 500th anniversary. Anniversary that the Head of State wanted to celebrate this morning, Monday, April 15 (Leonardo’s birthday), by paying a visit to the Tuscan village that gave him birth for the preview of the exhibition “Leonardo in Vinci. The origin of the Genius”‘, one of the initiatives that are taking place in the framework of the program developed by the Region of Tuscany to celebrate Leonardo. It is the second time that a Head of State takes part in celebrations for Leonardo Da Vinci, the first was Luigi Einaudi on April 15, 1952.

Mattarella was greeted by a long round of applause. To welcome him, the mayor of Vinci, Giuseppe Torchia, school children and a big crowd. Among the presents, also the Cultural Heritage minister Alberto Bonisoli. After a ceremony from the stage, Mattarella visited the Leonardo museum for the ribbon cutting of the exhibition in the museum dedicated to Leonardo. Then he paid a visit to the native Leonardo’s house, in the Anchiano hamlet.
